Linux 6.15 Kernel Brings Major Apple Silicon Improvements: Touch Bar, Audio & PCIe Support

Linux 6.15 kernel brings major Apple Silicon improvements, including Touch Bar support, PCIe/USB-A fixes, and audio patches for M1/M2 Macs. Learn about the latest Asahi Linux developments for Apple hardware.

The upcoming Linux 6.15 kernel is set to introduce significant advancements for Apple Silicon Macs, thanks to the relentless efforts of the Asahi Linux project.

This update includes critical drivers and patches that enhance compatibility with M1 and M2 MacBook Pros, paving the way for broader Linux adoption on Apple hardware.

Key Features in Linux 6.15 for Apple Silicon

1. Touch Bar & Display Controller Support

The Apple Display Pipe (ADP) driver and Z2 touchscreen digitizer are now part of the upstream kernel, enabling Touch Bar functionality on:

  • M1 13" MacBook Pro

  • M2 13" MacBook Pro

This breakthrough allows Linux users to leverage Apple’s proprietary hardware features seamlessly.

2. PCIe & USB-A Support for M2 Pro Devices

The T6020 SoC (M2 Pro/Max) now has PCIe controller support, which is crucial for:

  • USB-A ports on M2 Pro Mac mini

  • WiFi & Bluetooth functionality

However, WiFi/BT support still depends on the System Management Controller (SMC), which is still under development.

3. Audio Enhancements & Speaker Amp Fixes

Linux 6.15 introduces patches for:

  • TAS2764 & TAS2770 amplifier chips (used in Apple Silicon Macs)

  • Basic audio support for Apple-specific variants

Ongoing Challenges: Microphone Support & M2 Pro Issues

While microphone support has been added for most M1/M2 MacBooks, the M2 Pro/Max models face compatibility issues due to differences in the Always-On Processor (AOP). The Asahi team is actively working on a fix.

Future Roadmap: M3 & M4 Support Still a Work in Progress

Despite progress with M1/M2Apple M3 and M4 Macs remain a major challenge. Full Linux support will take time, but the Asahi team continues to push forward.
